Another Makeover for Facebook Homepage

Facebook has yet again made substantial changes to its much maligned home page without warning resulting in an expected backlash. The social networking website boasting of over 300 million users has been in the past too known for its fixation with sudden home page changes, which receive lots of attention thanks to the sheer number of Facebook users out there.

In its latest update, Facebook has tweaked its Live News feed to display only those posts that Facebook thinks would be useful for you and your network of friends. So, what you will see here are feeds that are popular and have a sizable number of comments and likes. Other posts can, of course, be seen under the Live Feeds section which is still real-time. As expected, there has been a huge hue and cry over the current changes with the homepage and with over 300 million users, it certainly is difficult to please everyone. According to Facebook, the design changes came after a decent amount of feedback from existing users and represent the larger voice of Facebook users, which wanted this system.

Other noticeable updates include the new progress bar under a profile picture. This one lets you know how active your friend is on Facebook. This is apart from the twitter-like @tag that had been recently introduced.

Have you checked the updated home page yet? You might not actually notice all these changes if you like most Indians come from the Orkut school of thought, but then, Facebook is growing here in India-- and growing too fast to be ignored.

HTC HD2 with Android Might Come Soon

HTC's Windows Mobile powered HD2 has been in the news of late for obvious reasons. It is one of the most powerful smartphones to have ever been released - thanks to its snapdragon processor and not forgetting its humongous screen.

For those who thought it might be a very good idea to see this phone running Android, looks like your wishes are about to come true! A fresh rumor we're hearing of is that a new device, the HTC Passion will be out on Verizon in the near future. This phone is nothing but a CDMA version of the HTC Dragon - but running Android. The sad part of this is obviously the fact that it seems to be a Verizon exclusive - at least for now.

The Passion is evidently quite similar to the Dragon and in the blurry shot that folks over at the Unlockr has managed to source, the looks are quite similar. However, before we are able to confirm that this indeed is an Android powered device, we would like to see more of such "leaked" shots with a clear view of the familiar Android interface of course!

So, for the time being, we'll relegate this one to the "hope this phone comes out" file folder.

Techtree's Weekly Gaming Roundup!

Microsoft launched Windows 7 this week and hence all the PC titles that were held up would soon start getting release dates. Thankfully, gaming consoles aren t dependent on any such things and thus the gaming content kept following in for them.

Here s a quick look on what happened in gaming scene last week.

No Blu-rays for Xbox 360, only for PCs

Recently, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, hinted that Xbox 360 gaming console will get Blu-ray drives as external accessories. Microsoft later sent out a revised statement saying that the company has "no plans" to bring Blu-ray to Xbox 360. Despite the video taped interview where Ballmer is speaking about Blu-ray for Xbox, Microsoft prefers to re-iterate it plans to bring Blu-ray only for PC. Steve was referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. That s what Microsoft said mentioned to bring 1080p HD instant-on content streaming. But what about the Xbox 360 users with slow Internet connections?

Go Dirty with DiRT 2 PC in December

DiRT 2 for PC was held back due to unavailability of DirectX 11 supporting hardware and software. However, last month ATI announced DirectX 11 supporting ATI Radeon HD 5800 series graphics cards. On October 22, Microsoft officially released Windows 7 that brings DirectX 11 based gaming support. And now Codemasters plan to release DiRT 2 in North America on December 1, EPAC countries on December 3 and UK on December 4.

Apple updates Mac Mini Lineup

Apple had refreshed its Mac Mini lineup with three new models. The new Mac Mini models are touted to be equipped withfaster processor, double the memory and offer more storage. However, in India, only two new models are offered: 160GB storage carrying model for Rs. 33,900 ($599 for U.S.) and 320GB storage carrying model for Rs. 43,900 ($799 for US).

Previously, the entry level model gets Intel Core 2 Duo processor boost from 2GHz to 2.66GHz, memory gets updated from 1GB DDR3 (1066GHz) to 2GB DDR3 and storage from 120GB to 160GB. However, there's a price drop from Rs. 36,600 to Rs. 33,900 which also has specs bump.

A higher-end model got processor boost from 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo to 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory got doubled from 2GB DDR3 to 4GB DDR3 but storage remains the same 320GB SATA 5400RPM in it.

Both models have Nvidia GeForce 9400M integrated graphics with 256MB GDDR3 memory inside for best graphics and smoother HD playback. The number of ports in the hinds of the models remains the same - FireWire 800 port, five USB 2.0 ports, mini-DVI out, mini-Display port and VGA output.

Both models have slot-loading Super Multi Drives, built-in Gigabit Ethernet, built-in AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi (802.11n) and built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

A high end Mac Mini is also introduced with dual 500GB HDD and pre-configured with Mac OS X Snow Leopard server for $999 (Rs. 48,000 approx.).

Now, it's worth pondering if Dell would introduce zino HD models with higher specifications.

iPhone to Get Mozilla App Soon!

Mozilla CEO John Lilly has, in a recent interview, shed some light on its upcoming iPhone App. Well, not much except that it is an app.

That said, any app for the iPhone from Mozilla would be interesting. This is because Mozilla is famously known for its browser and to have a different browser apart from the default Safari browser on the iPhone is almost impossible. Apple did approve two browsers late last year though - but none of them was from major developers like Opera or Mozilla.

So, it is interesting to note what kind of an application is Mozilla actually working on. While it's quite natural for anyone to assume it might be a new browser, keeping in mind Apple's stand on third party browsers, we can also expect a software other than a browser. It could be anything, ranging from a bookmark sync tool or a plug in for the existing Safari browser.

Mozilla is making a big push into the mobile browsing territory and already has browsers for Windows Mobile and the Maemo platforms.
