97 percent Indians would Own Mobile Phones by 2014

97 percent Indians would Own Mobile Phones by 2014There is no doubt that India is one of the fastest growing mobile phone markets in the world.

Each day, an increasing number of people get added to one of the many mobile networks in the country - all of which are growing at alarming rates. In short, it's clear that there would come a time when most of the country is "connected" via mobile phones.

Market research firm iSuppli has predicted that that by 2014, 97 percent of Indians would own mobile phones. This, for a country with a huge percentage of population below the poverty line, would be a weirdly unique achievement. "Such high mobile teledensity means that almost everyone - except children and the abjectly poor - will have a cell phone in India, with those having multiple mobiles boosting total subscription rates and compensating for those without," said Jagdish Rebello, Ph.D., Senior Director and Principal Analyst for Wireless Research at iSuppli.

iSuppli has arrived at this figure going by the current growth rates. By 2009 end India had "just" 525 million mobile subscribers - and in a year, the number is set to reach 766.0 million - that's an increase of almost 50 percent in just a year.

The only country with more mobile subscribers than India is China.

Teen Exposes Twitter Flaw, Hackers Exploit It

Teen Exposes Twitter Flaw, Hackers Exploit ItA 17-year old teen from Melbourne, Australia "claimed responsibility" for making public the cross scripting flaw on Twitter - which in a few hours took a potent form and caused a widespread attack on Twitter.

The flaw, which was exposed in a casual tweet, was exploited by hackers and in a few hours, Twitter was under attack. The "MouseOver" JavaScript code that was exposed automatically opened a pop up window when a user simply hovered his mouse over links on Twitter. This spelt a golden opportunity for hackers who used the flaw to make people click on links they might have not clicked usually. Most of these links lead to adult and infected websites.

Twitter explained about the attack in a detailed blog post and added that it was aware of the flaw a month back and had already fixed it. However, a recent update to the site caused the security hole to reappear and was then forgotten. Bob Lord, a spokesperson from the Twitter Security team says, "First, someone created an account that exploited the issue by turning tweets different colors and causing a pop-up box with text to appear when someone hovered over the link in the tweet. Other users took this one step further and added code that caused people to re-tweet the original Tweet without their knowledge."

Twitter confirmed that it would not be pursuing legal action against the perpetrators of the attack - nor will it identify individuals publicly who might have been involved in these attacks.

Free Indian Maps Update for Motorola Android Phone

Free Indian Maps Update for Motorola Android PhoneMotorola India has said it will push a free and upgraded version of maps for India to Android power handsets - Milestone, Milestone XT720 and Backflip. The Mapping application is powered by MapMyIndia that offers street-level navigation, routing in 620 cities, and over 576000 towns as well as villages of India. Motorola's MOTONAV has 'India' centric maps that are a part of the free GPS Navigation service. This service requires no activation or data charges, can be used even without a SIM in the phone and isn't dependent on the mobile networks.

Looks like Motorala will push the update Over-The-Air for Indian citizens or maybe make it available at Motorola service centers. Motorola Milestone XT720, Backflip and Milestone consumers can call Motorola's toll-free number 1800 3000 4343 or email info.in@motorola.com for further information.

Facebook Faces Worst Downtime in 4 Years

Facebook Faces Worst Downtime in 4 YearsUpdate:

Facebook has clarified, in a lengthy blog post, details about this outage which it calls the worst outage of the site in four years. Earlier today, Facebook was unavailable for a lengthy period of time  - throwing continuous error messages. With Twitter too facing an attack not long ago, many thought of this being yet another planned attack against the social network. However, Facebook has clarified that it was an internal system error that caused this outage.

The blog post (read it only if you're a geek!) explains that the outage was caused due to an automated system used by Facebook. The job of this system was to find and replace invalid configuration values. The system deletes erroneous values in the cache and replaces them with configuration values that it thinks are updated values from a good persistent database. However, during the outage, the cache was replaced by erroneous values from the usually correct persistent value database. This persistent database was slightly changed by Facebook and was then interpreted as invalid. Soon after, every single client saw the invalid value and attempted to fix it. Because the fix involves making a query to a cluster of databases, that cluster was quickly overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of queries a second. If that wasn't all, all this called a domino effect that was only stopped after Facebook turned off the site and fixed the issue.

Facebook seems to be reeling under a down time of sorts. The site is sporadically accessible and is throwing up multiple error messages.

This is the second unscheduled downtime the worlds largest social network is facing in two days. Incidentally, this also comes just a few days after the other high profile network Twitter faced an attack that exploited a security hole in the framework of the website.

As of now, these are the error messages you'd come across if you try accessing Facebook.

According to Mashable, Facebook has confirmed that its facing "Latency" issues. However, the problem could be much bigger than what it seems now. We expect a blog post soon from Facebook who are better poised to explain what caused this outage.

LittleBigPlanet 2 delayed till January 2011

LittleBigPlanet 2 delayed till January 2011Media Molecule, the creator of LittleBigPlanet game, has pushed the release date of LittleBigPlanet 2 game to January 2011 from November 2010. The sequel to the popular LittleBigPlanet game is one of the most anticipated game titles this year due to its support for PlayStation Move - the motion sensing game controller. Developers claimed that the delay is because they want to polish the game. Looks like developer Media Molecule has got a whiff of Blizzard's developers.

LittleBigPlanet is an immensely popular game on the PlayStation 3 platform which lead Sony to buy out Media Molecule. With the PlayStation Move motion sensing game controller already available now, every gamer was looking forward for some fun with LittleBigPlanet Sackboys in the holiday season. Media Molecule said it isn't happy with the current version of the game, and wants to polish it more.

On the official LittleBigPlanet blog, Media Molecule guys posted, "We know this will come as disappointing news for all you LittleBigPlanet fans, and believe us, we are disappointed too. We are a tight-knit team and we take enormous pride in our work, so to raise the bar we've set with the original LittleBigPlanet, a game that has been so embraced by all, we've agreed to allow ourselves a bit more time to deliver the experience that our great fans and community deserve. We are truly sorry, but hope you understand that we have to build the best possible game, as it is the foundation of our community."

Now all those who were really looking forward to have some fun with family and friends during the holiday season will have to wait till January-end. However, will it affect the PlayStation Move sales at the moment?

Nonetheless, Media Molecule guys also pointed - that they are going to find a way to give more of you a taste of LBP2 prior to launch, so stay tuned. We believe some exclusive Beta or DLC stuff is en route. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Mozilla shows off Seabird Concept Phone

Mozilla shows off Seabird Concept PhoneMozilla Labs has shared a community driver concept mobile phone - Mozilla Seabird that will make your jaws drop in awe. It's not a fake viral promotion like the Pomegranate phone. Designer Billy May has created the Seabird concept phone mockups and video that will simply blow you off your feet.

Mozilla Seabird is a part of Mozilla Labs' Concept series and is basically an experiment to understand how users may interact with mobile content in future. Starting off with the basics, the Seabird seems to run Google's Android mobile operating system. With touchscreen support, the Seabird will feature embedded Bluetooth dongle that will also serve as Haptic Clicking point. It can be used as Bluetooth Headset and even for 1:1 Infrared Tracking.

Samsung Beam was the first smartphone with a Pico projector inside it. To carry on that legacy forward, the Seabird concept incorporates two Pico projectors that also serve out angular virtual keyboards for typing. Those keyboards will remind you of Jarvis computer in Iron Man movies.

Marvell Triple Core Smartphone Processor Announced

Marvell Triple Core Smartphone Processor AnnouncedIf you thought dual core processors on mobile phones of tomorrow are the next big thing, be prepared to be surprised.

Marvell has announced the launch of a new mobile SoC (System on Chip) called the ARMADA 628. This processor boasts of three cores and is clocked at 1.5Ghz. The processor runs on ARM v7 infrastructure and a Cortex A9 MPCore. This kind of processing power makes the phone capable of playing back two simultaneous 1080p 3D video-streams. The ARMADA 628 is also said to be good for powering a device for up to 10 hours on a single charge - all while playing a high definition video. It also promises 140 hours of continuous music playback. The first two cores of the processor run in a "high performance" mode while the third core is "optimized for low-power operation and is clocked at only 624MHz."

Apart from this, it is also set to be one of the first smartphone platforms to support USB 3.0. Graphics too would be amazing on devices powered by this one, which is capable of rendering 200 million triangles a second. To put things in to perspective, Samsung's Hummingbird processor can churn out "only" 90 million triangles.

The ARMADA 628 is expected to be seen inside smartphones and tablets by next year.

PS3 Update Disrupts Third Party Peripherals

PS3 Update Disrupts Third Party PeripheralsJust four days ago, Sony had released firmware 3.50 update for PlayStation 3 gaming console to bring 3D Blu-ray support along with other features. However, it turns out that this update disables third party USB adapters for the game console. Several disgruntled PS3 owners have posted about the disabled accessories at the Sony PlayStation forum boards. After pulling the plug on Other OS support, looks like Sony is out to disable all third party peripherals for PS3.

Sony has put up a consumer alert against counterfeit and unlicensed game controllers. In this alert, Sony stated, "SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates. SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products."

In this rebellion to outcast the counterfeit game controllers, Sony has disabled even some original game accessories like Guitar Hero Guitar and MadCatz Pads. Sony also stated, "SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products."

So, in case your third party game controller has been disabled, you have no option but to throw it away and buy the original one.

Microsoft: Blu-ray will be passed by Format

Microsoft: Blu-ray will be passed by FormatMicrosoft has been avoiding putting Blu-ray in Xbox 360 though it has been heavily demanded till date. Microsoft's UK director, Stephen McGill, in an interview with Xbox 360 achievements noted that Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format. Currently, Microsoft's Windows OS supports the Blu-ray. Looks like Microsoft has no plans to support Blu-ray anywhere else but on Windows OS.

Even though Blu-ray might have won the high definition format war against HD DVD, it still hasn't been adopted widely. Despite the fact that Apple has been on Blu-ray Disc Association board, it never really included the Blu-ray format in its camp. Apple CEO Steve Jobs once referred to Blu-ray as a "bag of hurt" and hence, none of the Apple computers come with Blu-ray drives since they directly compete with iTunes. Apple has been selling HD movies and TV shows through iTunes for almost a year.

Last year, Microsoft had nixed any hardware support for the Blu-ray discs. The company had clearly denied adding Blu-ray support to its game console. And now, with Xbox LIVE, Microsoft is going to offer 1080p HD video downloads that clearly eliminate the need of buying a Blu-ray disc.

So, as of now, two major proprietary OS and other computing product makers have totally warded off Blu-ray format. Though indirectly, Microsoft has pointed that Blu-ray might get extinct and what will remain is digital HD files. But that won't happen. It is because many hardware makers have already invested a lot in making Blu-ray players.

Blu-ray, as a format, is still not completely adopted in India. Do you think Blu-ray is here to stay at least for next 5 years? Do let us know in the comments section below.

Pre-Order Your Nokia N8 in India

Pre-Order Your Nokia N8 in IndiaWhile Nokia prepares for the much awaited Nokia World event, here's some good news for those of you who have been waiting patiently for the N8 to be launched here in India.

A Chennai based blogger, Gadgetbuff, has reported about the N8's imminent availability in Chennai. According to him, the revelation regarding the N8 came from a shopkeeper at the Nokia Priority Dealer in Chennai. The phone is apparently ready to be launched and they are accepting bookings for the same. If you happen to be in Chennai, you might ant to verify this. The booking amount is said to be Rs. 3,000.

When asked about the launch date, the dealer quoted a date of September 14 or 15 - making the launch a good 15 days prior to the October 1 international launch of the N8.

To cross verify, he contacted another dealer who gave him a different launch date - September 23. The price was quoted to be around the Rs. 25,000 to 28,000 mark. The dealer added that the first 100 customers would also receive a gift.

By the looks of it, the N8 would be here before it is launched in most international markets!

Samsung TVs to Get Android Soon?

Samsung TVs to Get Android Soon?Samsung, already the leader in the HDTV segment, seems to have its plans ready to ensure it doesn't lose its grip over the market any time soon.

The company is apparently gearing up to introduce Android powered TV's in to its lineup in the near future. While Samsung has already tried its hand at "connected" TVs earlier (complete with Internet connectivity and browsers), Android laden TVs of the future would obviously be a league of its own - thanks to its more intuitive UI and the possibility of apps and games developed specially for large screened TVs. While connected TVs have always been "cool", there has been little commercial success seen in this from - until now that is.

Samsung's competitors including Sony and LG too are again concentrating on the next generation of "connected" TVs. The idea is basically to make the television an entertainment hub and almost PC-like with it not being limited to watching soaps or movies.

It would be interesting to see if these new Android based TVs manage to make an impact.

No Game Center Support on iPhone 3G

No Game Center Support on iPhone 3GApple has announced the iOS 4.1 firmware update for its iPhone and iPod touch devices. While we patiently await the update, Apple has announced the compatibility of Game Center - its social gaming network service - with different iOS based devices. Out of all the existing devices, Apple's Game Center won't be compatible on iPhone 3G, first generation iPhone and first generation iPod touch.

While we know that iPhone 3G owners might get a bit furious for being left out, it should be noted that the iPod touch second generation has faster and different hardware as we reported in the past. So we suppose that the Game Center app itself must be a bit graphics intensive. Though the iPod touch second generation has 128MB RAM inside its body, the 533MHz ARM1176JZ(F)-S microprocessor can speed up to 620MHz.

The Game Center, with iOS 4.1 firmware update, will be compatible on the following devices:

- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPod touch 2nd Generation
- iPod touch 3rd Generation
- iPod touch 4rd Generation

Do keep checking your iTunes 10 after attaching your iOS device to download and install the new iOS 4.1 update expected today.

IE 9 Beta Expected on September 15

IE 9 Beta Expected on September 15A couple of months ago we'd seen Microsoft release a Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 9. It was a freely downloadable tool that essentially was the back end of IE9 without the user interface of a browser. So, all it could do is run many of the tests that Microsoft had put on their "Test Drive" website. Today we're exactly a week away from Microsoft releasing its beta to the world, and we got some info straight from the horse's mouth. We spoke to Moorthy Uppaluri, General Manager, Developer Partner Evangelism at Microsoft India and this is the info he gave us:

  • IE9 will have a interface update - Everybody's going minimalistic these days. Be it Chrome, Opera 10.6 or even the recent Firefox 4, everybody has compacted their top area to give the users more viewable space in the browser window. While Microsoft withheld the exact changes in design, they did say that Internet Explorer will get a facelift that will be shown to the world on September 15. We can only expect it to be in line with this simplistic design trend.
  •  Speedier than before - We've heard and even experienced how the previous versions of Internet Explorer, including the recent 7 and 8, were slower than other browsers. Microsoft hopes to change that, thanks to their reworked Javascript engine, which seems to show performance that is at par or even better with some of its competitors. IE9 will also harness the power of the graphics chip in your computer to render content, thanks to its use of DirectX APIs built into Windows. In other words, GPU acceleration is coming IE.
  • Compliance to latest standards - Broadly speaking, we're referring to IE 9's compatibility with HTML5 and CSS3. As the world's webpages begin to move towards the latest web standards, Microsoft has shown commitment to adhere to standards set by the W3C. This move also hopes to ease the burden on web developers, who have to tune a single website differently for it to render accurately different browsers.

Will Internet Explorer 9 be able to turn those users' attention who have already switched over to alternatives? We will know on September 15, and will keep you posted.
