AMD has been talking about Fusion APU (accelerated processing unit) since a couple of years now. At the ongoing Computex 2010 convention in Taipei, Taiwan, AMD finally demonstrated its Fusion APU chip to the attendees as well as the world. AMD Fusion APU comprises of AMD x86 microarchitecture based CPU crammed with ATI Radeon GPU chip. AMD promises to bring Fusion APU with one billion transistors by early 2011.
AMD's Fusion project waslong delayed and much hyped about when it was announced back in 2006. After AMD acquired ATI graphics, the Fusion project was announced. Basically, a Fusion APU would comprise of CPU, GPU, video processors, and other accelerator capabilities crammed on a single power-efficient die. This Fusion APU promises media-rich Internet experiences, better HD video application usages, and of course DirectX 11 support.
Recently, AMD was reported to bring Fusion APU for netbooks and ultraportables besides the desktops and notebook platforms.
As of now, the AMD Fusion APU sounds good on the paper in terms of specifications and possibilities. We'd like to see more of it when it comes to real world.
