India might be the proverbial IT Superpower, but the fact that the country continues to slip down the rankings in its supercomputing abilities might just worry the patriotic IT buff in you.
Top500, a foundation formed in 1993 to assemble and maintain a list of 500 of the most powerful computer systems present on the planet has released its latest data according to which the fastest Indian Supercomputer (which was the fourth fastest supercomputer in 2007) has slipped to the 33rd spot in its latest rankings. Top 500 compiles data in six monthly intervals and India has been dropping down the list consistently.
India's Tata Sons EKA is the fastest computer in India. It is capable of a peak speed of 0.172 petaflops per second, which mind you, is uber fast. However, with a peak speed of 2.98 petaflop per second China's Nebulae is more than twice as fast as India's fastest supercomputer. The Nebulae, is the second fastest supercomputer in the world, right behind the US' Jaguar. India s second fastest supercomputer, located at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune, lies at the 94th spot in the list.
The US leads the list of countries with the most number of supercomputers with it alone accounting for 282 of the fastest computers on the planet. UK has 38 while China and Germany has 24. India has just 5.
