We continue to list the best games in the past year. Here we go.
Action Adventure
Shadow Complex
Based around the events of a novel by Orson Card and designed from grounds-up as homage to Metroid games, Shadow Complex is a shining example of how a simple game can be infinitely fun. The game adapts a less often used technique of placing the player in a complete 3D environment, but at the same time restricting their movement to only 2-dimentions. The result is a game that combines best of both worlds-old-school side-scrollers and contemporary 3D games. The minimalistic storyline admirably complemented the game's fast paced action that constantly rewards players with upgrades and new gear. The fact that Shadow Complex is an XBLA release and consequentially has a lower price point, works to further sweeten the deal and makes it a must-have title for an Xbox 360 owner.

Batman Arkham Asylum
Batman Arkham Asylum is perhaps the sweetest and the most pleasant surprise of the year 2009 in gaming. Much in the same way the Dark Knight brings reason to the distraught citizens of Gotham City, this game brought us all hope by showing that all license-based games do not have to be cringe inducing. What Rocksteady Studios did with Arkham Asylum has earned them the right to join that very exclusive club of developers that have actually managed to capture a gamers' imagination with a game based on a super-hero. Beautifully dark and morbid level design, some pretty tightgame play and impressive voice acting, all combine to deliver a highly enjoyable game.
