We Will Sell 500mln Phones in 2010: Nokia

Nokia seems to be very optimistic about what 2010 has in store for it. The company, which over the past two years has seen its dominance being seriously challenged by players like Samsung and Apple (the latter on the smartphonesfront), is all gung ho about 2010.

In U.S., the company has seen a massive drop in its market share from a unchallenged 35 percent back in 2002 to a meager 7 percent in 2009. The sharp drop was seen soon after the iPhone was launched in 2007. The iPhone continues its dominance almost three years into its launch and apart from the recent patent infringement suit against Apple, Nokia's product line has not seen much of a radical change.

Having said that, Nokia's phone unit chief Rick Simonson has told Reuters that his company expects to ship over 500 million units across three platforms in 2010. That sure looks like a very good figure and if you do the math, it almost adds upto 40 percent of all handsets to be sold in the world in 2010. This figure is way off the "conservative" 458 million handsets estimate that independent market research agencies point out. Now, either Simonson has a trump card under his sleeves or he is really optimistic about the state of the mobile market in 2010. Anyway, companies like Samsung and LG are examples of how companies have managed to weather the recession and sell millions of sensibly priced phones. If they can do it, why not Nokia?
