While, there is no doubt left regarding the fact that there IS a market for quite a few tablets, is the market big enough for smaller players too who seem to be all gung ho about them and have decided to jump on to the tablet bandwagon? Latest amongst these is Smart PC, a manufacturer from Colombia, who has revealed its latest range of tablets called Hyper and Smart Touch.
Besides ARM based chips, manufacturers now have options like Intel's Pine Trail platform and NVIDIA's Tegra 2 SoC which are powerful enough to power most demanding of tablets. Incidentally, Smart PC has tablets based on both these platforms in their line-up known as the Hyper and Smart Touch. The Hyper boasts of 512MB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage capacity and as expected, runs Android.
As for the Smart Touch, it is based on the Intel Pine Train platform and features 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard disk and even a DVD writer. Its specs do make it more of a netbook rather than a tablet. It also has two USB ports and supports multi touch gestures. The device, however, runs Windows 7 and for the same reason, is more "PC Like". Both of them have 10-inch displays.
The Smart Touch is expected to be priced at $608 and the Hyper costs $387. The latter is already on sale in South America. Let us also not forget on this occasion that Olive has the OlivePad on sale in India - which is arguably one of the first tablets to be on sale in our country. Oh and it runs Android ! More about that here.
