Smartphone Maker i-mate Winds Up

If you have been following the smartphone space for the past few years, the brand i-mate would be well known for you. Until a few years ago, it made some of the most desirable and most sought after Windows Mobile based devices.

The line up from the company included the JasJar, JasJam, K-Jam and the likes - all of which were premium devices. However, all of them lost their sheen soon after the arrival of the iPhone 3G. With HTC taking matter into its own hands, and stopping supply of handsets to i-mate, things started getting worse for the company. It did try to bring a few new handsets of its own - but nothing really clicked. All these events have now culminated in the news of i-mate being officially shut down.

The Dubai based company reportedly asked its employees to go on an unpaid leave for two months via an internal email. Soon after that, offices were shut and the CEO Jim Morrison has apparently left UAE. Looks like the recession has just claimed yet another victim and this time, it was a company that was rather famous and known for its high-end smartphones. Sigh.
