New Budget ATI Radeon HD 5450 Arrives

ATI has introduced new budget friendly Radeon HD 5450 graphics card at price lower than $60 (Rs. 2,900 approx.). Meant for the ultra low-end segment or let's say, the freshers to gaming, the new HD 5450 would be first sub-$60 graphics card to support DirectX 11. Dubbed as Cedar, the new ATI Radeon HD 5450 will also support ATI's multi-monitor Eyefinity technology and ATI Stream technology.

ATI's Cedar Radeon HD 5450 has 80 stream processors just like HD 4550 has the same number of stream processors. Difference between both cards is the GPU die size. New HD 5450 carries 40nm manufacturing process made GPU while the HD 4550 has 55nm process made GPU. The Cedar card's GPU core engine clocked at 650MHz which is 50MHz higher than that of HD 4550. Radeon HD 5450 has 1600MHz data rate bearing GDDR3 memory with 64-bit memory bus interface.

The difference in the GPU chip size has also affect the Thermal Design Power rating of HD 5450 which is 19.1W compared with 25W of HD 4550. Of course, to go below $100 price segment, ATI did loads of hardware changes and one of them was using GDDR3 memory standard and 64-bit memory bus interface. In a way, HD 5450 is first Evergreen family card that doesn't sport GDDR5 memory.

New Radeon HD 5450 will obviously support DirectX 11 for the Windows 7 based computers. Just like other Radeon HD 5000 series graphics, the new HD 5450 will also support ATI's multi-monitor technology - Eyefinity. For connecting up to three displays, one can make use of Dual-link DVI-I port, DisplayPort and HDMI 1.3 port.

Nvidia GeForce GT 220 will face tough competition from Radeon HD 5450 in terms of pricing but GeForce 210 has almost same specifications as the latter one. Nonetheless, Nvidia uses GDDR2 memory while HD 5450 uses GDDR3 and most importantly supports DirectX 11 functionality. Expect to see HD 5450 based graphic cards from several vendors soon.
