Last month, scarce details about Nvidia's Optimus technology to boost the discrete GPU performance and deliver better battery life were revealed. This new technology aims to 'revolutionize' usage of GPUs in notebooks by getting best performance off discrete GPU. X-bit Labs has learnt about Nvidia Optimus and believe it to be improved version of Hybrid SLI and Hybrid Graphics technologies. Nvidia is rumored to unveil this technology on February 9.
With Nvidia Optimus technology, the company aims to make the system switch automatically between integrated graphics and discrete graphics to make the best of the latter. Also, keep switching to integrated graphics in order to keep battery life at the highest level. The entire switching between graphics would be seamless for the end-users and would be easily usable through Windows 7 operating system, if only, the OS allows installing two graphics drivers at same time.
Essentially, the Hybrid SLI and Hybrid Graphics offered something similar on that context. Obviously, Optimus being a new technology will have several enhancement over previous generation one. Collaboration and seamless switching between GPU and IGP (integrated graphics processors) is what Nvidia aims to achieve.
Battery life along with cutting edge graphics is one of the major requirements of any consumer today. Basically, battery life of a notebook or netbook is what eventually everyone looks for. Again, very scanty details came out about Nvidia Optimus and looks like we'll have to wait till it is officially announced.
