Customize your Samsung Omnia HD With HX-7

Samsung's i8910 Omnia HD has to be one of the path breaking handsets of its time without doubt. Think about it. The first phone to bring HD video recording, the first Symbian device with a capacitive screen and to have an UI that was zippy and fast. If that wasn't all, it has an amazing screen - all of 3.7 inches. And yes, it's probably still one of the very few Symbian phones with an AMOLED screen. The lists of firsts were mind boggling during its time.

But guess what? Most Omnia HD users out there (including yours truly) remain an unhappy bunch - all thanks to Samsung's indifference to the handset. Soon after the devices' launch, Samsung sort of ditched Symbian and started focusing on Android and its very own bada OS. While Nokia continued to shower the N97 with firmware updates, updates were hard to come by for the Omnia HD. That's when a bunch of Omnia HD owners decided to take things into their own hands.

The result was HyperX - A custom firmware series for the Omnia HD which has been singlehandedly developed by a modder simply known as "Hyper X". The custom firmware designed by the chap has just reached its 7th generation and continues to make the Omnia HD remain contemporary as it gets older. The latest update in the form of HX V7 adds in a lot of features and makes the Omnia HD STILL a desirable handset.

The new firmware is a true heaven for a hardcore Symbian user. It offers mind boggling levels of customisations and feature additions (some of which Samsung couldn't have added) to the phone including a totally new home screen, customisable Kinetic scrolling. You can even control the CPU speed! (Not overclock).

If you happen to own a Samsung Omnia HD - and are ready to take the risk of voiding your warranty, this one is definitely recommended. The result is an entirely new handset.

Updating to Hyper X might seem a tad geeky initially - but once you're through the initial hiccups, it's a fairly straight forward procedure. Also please, please note that this update will delete all your data on the phone. So you know what to do before you decide to mod your phone. Also note that this procedure does have the ability to brick your phone. Be warned.
