In what has to be a first by Nokia, it has asked the users of its devices to let them know the features that they would want to see in the next edition of the Symbian OS. The users were posed the question in the form of a poll posted on the Nokia Conversations blog.
A week and almost 400 plus votes later, things became clear as to what the users want from Symbian^3. The poll showed that as much as 27 percent of the want next-generation graphics - that will include 2D and 3D effects and "a semi transparent UI, and overlays across applications". The demand for multitouch stood at second place. As much as 19 percent of the users wanted multitouch to be implemented. The users also wanted it to be implemented all across the phone and not just in specific menu areas or just within multimedia based applications. Then there was a strong demand for a new homescreen, better memory management, single-tap interaction, smart network management, one-click connectivity and HDMI support.
As we are already aware, the first of the Symbian^3 based phones should arrive by the second half of this year. The Nokia N8 which appeared recently might be the first handset to sport this next generation OS from Symbian. Anyway, we are wondering if this poll is a bit late. The poll comes at a stage when Symbian^3 is at an advanced stage of its development. Polls of this kind should have arrived much earlier during the design phase of the OS. But then, Symbian^4 can now be designed according to the people's requirements and not according to what the company thinks is the best for the consumers. Nokia will now have some nice feedback for folks over at Symbian who are busy with Symbian^4 as you read this.
