Vodafone and Opera have announced the launch of a customized version of the Opera Browser - designed to run on low-end, low cost phones.
The endeavor, according to Vodafone, will help bridge the digital divide through the use of new technology, cheap handsets and low tariffs. The idea is to bring fast mobile Internet to millions of customers.
The Opera Mini browser, as we already know, uses compression technology to process web pages and saves as much as 90 percent of data. This, apart from making the web pages load faster on a 2G connection, also helps the user save money on data charges. It also requires very less processing power and less network capacity, resulting in a richer internet experience in low cost handsets.
The "special" preloaded version of Opera Mini would be optimized for the Vodafone network. It would also come preloaded with 5 mini widgets .Vodafone also adds that as many as 20 handsets would come with this version of the browser preloaded. Of course there are over 250 supported handsets that you can install this version of the browser as well. Vodafone has also worked on affordable data plans for users who want to experience worry free browsing - as they call it.
Vodafone is also creating an on-screen browsing experience that is designed to help someone who may have little experience of the internet. The on-screen experience will feature step-by-step, simple instructions in local languages, with a strong emphasis on the use of intuitive icons to help those with lower levels of literacy.
The initiative is initially being rolled out in India, South Africa, Turkey, Tanzania and Egypt with other markets expected to follow in the near future.
