Twitter CEO Evan Williams has announced that the company intends to come up with a native Android app. The announcement was made at the Twitter Chirp conference on April 14.This comes just days after Twitter bought Tweetie and announced that it would become the official Twitter app on theiPhone. As of now, it remains to be seen if Twitter has a similar strategy in sight to cover up its Android ground too. Twitter had also recently released a native Twitter client for BlackBerry devices. In case of the BlackBerry, however, Twitter worked together with RIM to develop an application from the scratch - instead of buying out an already existing client.
As of now, apps like Twitdroid and Seesmic are the ones high up on the Twitter users' Android preferences. If Twitter chooses to go on its own to develop the app, will it ring the death knell for existing popular applications?
According to Techcrunch, investor Fred Wilson had, in a post, asked Twitter start-ups to concentrate on apps that fall out of the realms of Twitters' core functionality (eg, apps that help you tweet) - and concentrate on other apps that can create entirely new businesses. This has led to widespread debate amongst techies who are wondering if Twitter is on a mission to fill the gaps in its "lineup" of offerings.
